Our Approach

Cost Estimation Methodology

We combine four complementary pricing methodologies to maximise accuracy at each AACE estimate class — from factored screening to vendor-quoted definitive estimates.

1
📚

Factored / Analogous

Scale costs from analogous projects using capacity-based scaling factors (0.6 exponent rule). Used for Class 4–5 estimates. KDMine database: 200+ analogous projects.

2
🗃️

Equipment-Based (CostMine)

Price individual equipment items from CostMine 2026 database (850+ items) with installation factors, freight, and commissioning allowances. Primary method for Class 3–4.

3
📩

Vendor Budgetary Quotes

Obtain budgetary quotes from OEM vendors for major equipment (SAG mills, HPGR, autoclaves, large pumps). Required for Class 2–3. KDMine maintains active vendor relationships globally.

Lead times now 22–36 months. Supply chain constraints driving premium pricing. OEM order books full through 2027.
Structural Steel & Fabrication
+22% vs 2022
▲ +3.8% YoY
Moderated from 2022 peak (+45%). Regional variation significant: Australia +28%, Americas +18%, Iran +35%.
Skilled Labour (Mining)
+28% vs 2022
▲ +5.1% YoY
Persistent skills shortage in Australia, Canada, and Chile. Remote site allowances and FIFO costs up 15% since 2023.
Diesel Fuel
+12% vs 2022
▼ −2.1% YoY
Diesel prices eased in 2025–2026. Solar+BESS adoption reducing diesel exposure for new projects. Hedge strategies recommended.
Reagents (Lime, Cyanide, H₂SO₄)
+19% vs 2022
▲ +2.9% YoY
Sulphuric acid prices volatile due to HPAL demand surge. Cyanide supply tightening. Lime stable but freight costs elevated.
Concrete & Civil Works
+17% vs 2022
▲ +3.2% YoY
Cement and aggregate prices stabilising after 2022–2023 spike. Civil contractor availability improving in most regions.
Electrical Equipment
+31% vs 2022
▲ +7.4% YoY
Power transformers (>20 MVA) now 18–26 month lead times. MV switchgear and VSD drives tight. Copper content driving costs.
Haul Trucks (Large)
+24% vs 2022
▲ +4.6% YoY
Cat 793/797 and Komatsu 930E lead times 14–20 months. EV haul truck options (Komatsu 930E-5 AHS) commanding 25% premium.

Common Questions

CAPEX/OPEX Estimation FAQ

What is the typical accuracy of a Class 3 CAPEX estimate?
+
AACE 47R-11 defines Class 3 accuracy as −10% to +20% at the P50 level. In practice, KDMine targets −15% to +20% for Class 3 mining estimates. The asymmetry (wider upside range) reflects the reality that mining projects more commonly overrun than underrun. Monte Carlo analysis is used to quantify the P80 and P90 contingency requirements rather than applying a fixed percentage.
How do you handle equipment pricing for remote or sanctioned jurisdictions?
+
For projects in Iran and other jurisdictions with import restrictions, KDMine applies a three-layer pricing approach: (1) Identify locally manufactured equivalents where available, (2) Apply import duty, freight, and insurance premiums (typically +15–35% on FOB price), (3) Add lead time risk premium to contingency for long-lead items. We maintain a database of Iranian and regional equipment manufacturers and their 2026 pricing for common mining equipment categories.
What contingency percentage should I use for a Class 3 estimate?
+
KDMine does not recommend using a fixed contingency percentage for Class 3 estimates. Instead, we use Monte Carlo simulation to derive risk-based contingency. Typical results for open pit projects: P50 contingency 8–12%, P80 contingency 15–20%, P90 contingency 22–28%. Complex projects (HPAL, refractory gold, underground) typically require 5–8% higher contingency at each percentile.
Can you update an existing CAPEX estimate to 2026 pricing?
+
Yes. CAPEX estimate updates (re-basing) are one of our most common engagements. We apply category-specific escalation indices to update each cost line item from its original pricing date to June 2026. Typical re-basing engagement: 3–6 weeks, depending on estimate complexity. We also identify line items that require re-pricing from first principles.
